Artist-in-Residence (AiR)

ABOUT

The Artist-in-Residence (AiR) programme offers a space for research, experimentation and the development of new work. Artists have access to a wide range of printing techniques and technical expertise, a spacious workshop, non-toxic working methods, and a lively network of local and international artists, designers and makers.

Our residencies are intended as a space for exchange as much as production — a place to test ideas, develop new processes and make connections across disciplines and practices.

FACILITIES

We offer 24/7 workshop access for our residents.
Our experienced department managers are available between Monday to Thursdays for guidance and technical support.

agalab offers a wide range of classic and digital printing techniques, including silkscreen printing on paper and textiles, analogue photography, etching (drypoint and aquatint), Toyobo (polymer plate printing), lithography (stone printing), relief printing (linocut, woodcut and letterpress), and more. RESIDENCIES

agalab offers six artist-in-residence places – two with accommodation and four without accommodation – that include 24/7 access to AGALAB’s facilities. These residencies are intended for artists with some experience in printmaking who are looking for a dedicated period of production and exchange. Residents become part of agalab’s growing artistic community, and are encouraged to exchange knowledge through shared activities.

RESIDENCY WITH ACCOMMODATION

agalab offers accommodation for residents travelling from abroad to Amsterdam.

The two guest rooms are located beside the agalab facilities. By living and working at agalab for four weeks, residents have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in their practice, benefiting from dedicated production time, professional workshop facilities, and technical support. Accommodation at agalab includes your own shower, shared toilets, a shared equipped kitchen, a washing machine, and a dryer. There is also an agalab bicycle that residents may use.

RESIDENCY WITHOUT ACCOMMODATION

Residents have 24-hour access to the workplace and shared kitchen.

Rooms 1 & 2:

SCHEDULE

The residency cycle begins on the first Monday and end on the last Friday of the month.

WEEK 1: INTRODUCTION

Monday: Arrival, welcome, and introduction to the agalab team and your fellow residents, tour of the workshops, facilities, accommodation and practical information.
Tuesday: 9:30 Technical introduction to the silkscreen workshop. Communal lunch with residents and the AGALAB team.
Wednesday: 9:30 Technical introduction to the etching and intaglio workshops

[Optional on Friday and Saturday: workshop participation, silkscreen and etching]

WEEK 2: INDEPENDENT WORKING

Monday, Tuesday: Technical support available in the silkscreen workshop
Wednesday, Thursday: Technical support available in the etching/intaglio workshops

WEEK 3: INDEPENDENT STUDIO PRACTICE & STUDIO CONVERSATION

Monday: Mid-residency check-in: Meeting with the agalab team, visiting artist, and fellow residents to discuss your progress and exchange ideas.

WEEK 4: INDEPENDENT STUDIO PRACTICE & EXHIBITION

Wednesday: Installation of the exhibition
Thursday: agalab Open Day and exhibition
Friday: Check-out at 13:00

COST OVERVIEW

Residency (24/7 workshop access): €500,-

Duo residency (24/7 workshop access): € 750,–

Residency including accommodation: €1450,-

ADDITIONAL COSTS INCLUDE:

Material downpayment: €100
Material costs are not included in the residency and should be covered by the artist. At the start of their residency, artists receive a cost sheet to document their expenses. At the end of the residency, the remaining amount is transferred back to the resident.

Technical introduction: €55 /hour
*This technical introduction is for artists with little or no experience in the techniques they are planning to use, requiring more than a standard introduction before starting work in our studio. Please inform us beforehand so we can make sure there will be a studio technician available with the right expertise. You can take a look at our facilities here.

Workshops: Residents are eligible for a 50% discount to public workshops and masterclasses.

SUBSIDISED RESIDENCIES

RECENT GRADUATES
Artists graduating between 2024 and 2026 are eligible to apply for a 50% subsidised residency (Accommodation not included). This opportunity is intended to support artists at the beginning of their professional practice by providing access to agalab’s facilities, technical expertise, and creative community during a period of focused production and experimentation.

DUO RESIDENCIES
The Duo Residency encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration between an experienced printmaker and a practitioner from another field (such as a visual artist, designer, musician, researcher, writer or performer). Applicants accepted as a duo pay a reduced residency fee of €750 instead of the standard €1,000 (Accommodation not included). As agalab is first and foremost a professional printmaking workshop, at least one member of the duo must have demonstrable experience in printmaking and be able to work independently in the workshops following the technical introductions.

APPLICATION

agalab offers an independent research and/or production residency for artists who already possess a basic knowledge of printmaking and are looking for the time, facilities and technical support to realise new work or research a specific printing question.

Artists with no or little prior experience in printmaking are also welcome to apply for a residency at agalab. If you are new to a particular technique, introductory workshops can be arranged to help you get started. Please note that these workshops involve an additional cost.

We accept applications on a rolling basis throughout the year. We strongly encourage applicants to apply as early as possible as places are limited. If a residency period reaches capacity, applicants may be offered a place on our waitlist.

STEP 2: SELECTION AND CONFIRMATION
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. We aim to give you a reply within 4 weeks. If your application is successful, you will receive an offer of residency and be asked to submit any remaining documentation and complete payment.

Your residency place is confirmed once all required documents have been received and the residency fee has been paid.

PARTICIPATION AND EXCHANGE

The Artist-in-Residence programme is built around exchange and experimentation. We therefore ask all residents to actively contribute to the programme by:

– Presenting work produced during the residency in the final exhibition at De Bouwput Gallery space.

– Donating two prints created during the residency to the agalab archive, helping to build a lasting record of the residency programme and its participants.

– Contributing to a collaborative and respectful working environment, and participating in the communal activities outlined in the residency schedule.

FAQ

I am not an experienced printmaker. Can I still apply?
Yes. We welcome applications from artists at all levels of printmaking experience. However, agalab is primarily a professional printmaking studio, and residents are expected to work independently. If you are new to a particular technique, introductory workshops can be arranged to help you get started. Please note that these workshops involve an additional cost.

Is agalab open to collaboration partners?
We actively encourage collaborations with artists, researchers and organisations working across disciplines. Applicants may propose an external partner as part of their project.

Do I need to speak Dutch to do a residency?
No. Our workshops are held in English, and our staff speak English and Dutch.

Can agalab support my visa application?
We can support your visa application as your hosting institution. Once accepted as an Artist-in-Residence, we provide an invitation letter confirming your participation and activities for the official residency period.

Can additional guests and/or pets stay overnight?
Unfortunately, no pets are allowed to stay at agalab. Additional guests are €85 per night; however, we strongly recommend booking a hotel in the vicinity.

END-OF-RESIDENCY EXHIBITION

The exhibition in De Bouwput is a presentation of the work, experiments, and research developed during the residency, offering an opportunity to share process and give visitors an insight into the time spent at agalab. The format is intentionally open and conversational, creating a space for exchange between artists, the agalab community, and the public.
