In AGAcampus, local and international artists and designers are invited at AGA LAB to engage in research and experimentation. This stimulates artists and designers to enter a limbo of creative processes where research and production coincide and chances are embraced. A process in which old and new printing techniques are combined with other disciplines and fields.


In AGAcampus the communication between artists, designers and other creative professionals on social trends are expressly sought out.


AGA LAB invites artists and designers to its cultural programming for Artist in Residencies and projects in the field of fine arts, industrial, graphic, spatial and social design, fashion and bio art.
The planning regarding these events and collaborations is achieved in interaction with the artistic committee of AGA LAB.

The Artist in Residence (AiR) program of AGA LAB offers an optimal context for research, experimentation, and the development of new work; a broad range of printing techniques, technical expertise, a spacious gym as a workplace, exchanges between (inter)national colleagues, non-toxic methods, an urban agriculture garden filled with painting plants, and many creative neighbors.


The AGA LAB AiR program stimulates research and experimentation with ink, colour and image carriers, as well as cross-overs between disciplines and techniques.


International artists and designers can apply for the Artist in Residence program. AGA LAB regularly invites artists with a specific research question. Artists and designers are also encouraged to bear on a project. The two AiR rooms are situated in Broedplaats BOUW, in which AGA LAB studio is situated as well.


By being an AiR, you have 24-hour access to the workplace. You also have the collective AGA LAB kitchen at your disposal. Per month, the small room (20m2) costs €675, the big room (30m2) €745 and a residency without a room costs €350. For more information, you can mail or call 020-6252186.

Description of the residency program
With the open call ‘PUSHING THE MARGINS’ we would like to open up the approach to the medium and stimulate iterative research, experimentation and crossovers.


The residency provides Dutch and International artists with the opportunity to live and work in a studio building amongst other artists. With the residency, our aim is to increase artists mobility, promote cultural exchange connecting parallel practices.


Amsterdam has a vibrant art scene with many artist-run initiatives, galleries and exhibition spaces.


Duration of residency
Two months.


Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Artists working in other disciplines than printmaking are especially encouraged to apply. When applying margins as a strategy it can be a powerful concept.


We encourage participants to develop unconventional ways of conducting research as well as innovative forms of presenting the results, sharing their knowledge and stepping out of their ‘comfort zones’ of the expected.


AIR 1 and 2 are suitable for one artist, in AIR 2 it is possible to stay with a partner/artist. The kitchen is shared with the regular artists and AGA LAB staff.

Blauwe Maandag is a research project based on the question “How do you make paint or ink from plants, and how do you make these useable for different printing techniques”. The project was initiated in 2011 by biologist and artist Naan Rijks and is being carried out at AGA LAB. Mid 2013 scientist and teacher Jeroen Snijdewint joined the project. Anno 2017 there are more than 30 kinds of plants cultivated, which all have their strong dyes and pigments they contain, in common. In 2017 the team was strengthened with Lucila Kenny, specialist in making inks with natural materials. Together, Naan and Lucila, will give several workshops about making and printing with vegetable inks at AGAstudio during 2018.


Debra Solomon will be experimenting with chromatography as graphic art during her working period (June and July 2016). Debra deepens the research within the project Realrobotnik, which she exhibited with Jaromil Rojo in the Glass House last year. In order to extend the technique to establish direct growth of mycelium in graphic patterns.

For the Tijdelijk Binnenland Ateliers (Mondriaan Fund) AGA LAB works with Waag Society. De Waag is a pioneer in the field of digital media. In the past 20 years, it has developed as a platform for artistic research, a catalyst of experiments and events linked to relevant social developments.


Research in collaboration with buro BELÉN, Avans Hogeschool and Naan Rijks, in which the concept of realness and durability of colour is being questioned. Living Colours examines organically generated ink and coloured pastes for variation in colour fastness. Buro BELÉN and Naan Rijks developed a wallpaper which changes pattern and colour as time passes. The wallpaper was shown at the Van Abbe museum during DDW 2015. The research will continue in 2016.

Cultural institutions
AGA LAB cooperates with De Waag, WOW Amsterdam, Cascoland, Styling Academy Artemis, BNO, ROC Art + Design, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, de Rijksakademie, Gerrit Rietveld academy.

In October 2015, sixteen Amsterdam-based art institutions joined forces and created the POI, of which AGA LAB is one of the chairmen. This sector works with young artists and new creators. They are creators of culture, new forms and experimental art. The institutions are at the beginning of the chain with a spin-off for the cultural field. The goals that the POI are trying to realise include; engaging crossovers with other sectors and cooperate in overarching themes such as cultural education and Amsterdam promotion.



Professional workplaces
AGA LAB is an initiator with their workplace for professional artists in The Netherlands and Belgium, as well as with Sundaymorning@ekwc, Beeldenstorm, Frans Masereel Centrum and Transartists: Platform Werkplaatsen.



Ever since late 2014, AGA LAB manages, in collaboration with Knust, a DIY Riso workplace. Knust is a special print workplace based in Nijmegen and has been specialised in stencilling since 1984.

Knust is connected to experimental podium Extrapool in Nijmegen, and together they carry out a program around sound, art and print. Knust also hosts workshops and scheduled evenings in collaboration with AGA LAB about two to three times a year at AGA LAB’s workplace. Lecture  “Transgenic prints” by Alicia Candiani at AGA LAB – July 13, 2016
In the context of molecular biology ‘transgenic’ refers to an organism which derives from other origin sources. It partly carries something of the previous body, but is also completely new and is in an ‘in between’ status. Alicia Candiani sees this status as a metaphor for the position of contemporary graphics; how the breadth of the present-day printed media breaks the traditional parameters of this field and change the genes, as it were. This means more than a mixture of techniques and application to other materials. Graphics – according to Candiani – are largely determined by artistic conventions of certain historical currents. At the same time ‘printmaking’ often is used to express this transformation of historical categories. Therewith graphics are a transgenic media.

Symposium at Festival Analog Borders in The Hague – May 20, 2016
AGA presents its ongoing research and collaborations on the basis of Bio Art during the symposium Festival Analog Borders (FAB). FAB is a festival and symposium that goes beyond the boundaries of graphics. Organized by Grafische Werkplaats Den Haag.
The symposium will be launching the Platform Werkplaatsen website. AGA is one of the initiators of the Platform Werkplaatsen. The exhibition Analog Borders lasts until June 26th.



Bio Art panel at AGA LAB – April 20, 2016
The panel is an introduction to various angles of Bio ink / color / image, the method in the research, decisions and developments. AGA will work in the coming period with Waag Society on the basis of Bio Art.
