AGA LAB proudly presents, in association with Grafisch Werkcentrum Amsterdam and Podium Mozaiek: East Type West Type. A program filled with interesting and surprising encounters between cultural perspectives typography, designers and performers and make places from Amsterdam East and West. Workshops, lectures and a debate, a masterclass, a performance and an exhibition.
On April 8th, we open with the presentation of the research on the Arabic Typography by Lara Captan, in which she will tell us more about her beautiful new wooden letter based on the earliest calligraphic ways of Arabic Letterpress Typeface.
On April 9th, the typographic collective ‘High On Type’ gives a masterclass on typography in combination with screen printing.
Kanat, the Story of an Arabic Letterpress Typeface
On April 8th, you are welcomed at the official presentation of the new wooden character (as pictured above). This is the result of years of research by Lara Captan (Beirut, 1984), research focussing on the possibilities to develop a more original Arabic font without conforming itself to the western grids and rules. After all, ‘What if the Arabs invented letterpress?’.
With the help of the workshops of ZB45 and Rutger Paets, the letter eventually was formed out of wood.
As well as Lara Captan, Krystian Sarkis (co-founder of Typotheque) will give a lecture about his views on the top. Captan and Sarkis have written a manifesto on Arabic Typography, which will finally come to the public on this day.
Prior to this presentation, GWA is offering a short workshop, in which there will be printed with Western and Arab wooden letters.

High On Type Masterclass
On Sunday, April 9th, we move to the west side of town, to AGA LAB. Here the Typographers Collective ‘High On Type’ is hosting a masterclass on type design in combination with screen printing. ‘The Character of the Character’, or better said The Nature of the Character.
You will be able to create your own image, your own character and create a composition, and print this on a poster. At the end of the day, you can take your self-made poster home. An exhibition will follow!
